Meet Olivia…
If you notice a resemblance between her and the image of Spock (above and in The Left Hand of Dog, there's a reason for that.

Authors are often asked if they ever base their characters on real people. The answer is usually no. But in Spock's case, I made an exception. Everything about her – from her appearance to her personality to her obsession with spicy food – is based on Olivia.

Sadly, the real Olivia died at the end of 2019 at the age of (about) twelve. But thanks to The Left Hand of Dog, she'll live on forever.

Book review

This is the spot where I normally tell you about a book I enjoyed recently.

Except the truth is really disappointing … I spent much of August reading a book that threw a transphobic curve ball at the very end.

Instead of sharing that awful review with you, I'm asking you: What should I read next? Mainly I like science fiction (duh!) and mystery novels. But what really I love are books that dig deep into characters. And I love characters that aren’t stale, male, pale, cis-het, neurotypical.

So, go on… Hit me with your best shot. What book are you dying to share?
A great big question mark
Every month I present my review of a book I've enjoyed recently. I don't get anything for these reviews; there's no tit-for-tat. I just really liked the book and think you might too. You can follow my reviews at Goodreads or Readerly.
